1. Greg found a face in a pepper about a week ago and took a picture of it (see below). Today, we were eating Chinese food in the grass in Plaza de EspaƱa and he takes out a small box. He says, "I have to take a lot of pictures because he is going to die soon. I've been bringing him everywhere." He opens the box and there is the pepper face, wrinkly and brown, yet still smiling, though now on top of his head he has grown some weird, beige, moldy seeds. "He has hair", says Greg. I say "ew" as he puts the pepper on my foot and takes a picture of it.
2. We went to a salsa class last weekend. It was in the Tabacalera, this old warehouse-turned-cultural-center with free workshops. The class was in an upstairs room that smelled like leaking gas. In the beginning, the teacher yelled at all us newbies (half the class) that there was no room for us, then after 7 minutes of confusion, us wandering in small circles cocking our heads at one another, he said he was joking. I'll tell ya... Spanish humor..
We practiced basic steps (i.e. teacher shouting Spanish commands, everyone moving and turning, me following half a second late and Greg, 5 steps behind, running into some girl and stomping his foot in frustration). Later, those with experience formed circles and I, accidentally meeting eyes with some man without a partner, was forced to participate. It felt like a Jennifer Lopez rom-com... though I can't even really tell you why. I don't really like Jennifer Lopez. Anyway, I was literally just thrown around, girls passed from one guy to the next, I'd be tossed from a smiley little Indian man that tapped his feet and was too afraid to touch me to a sweaty Spaniard who was too not afraid to touch me, to a tall bald guy that just spun me around and around, to a Latin American guy in his own groove, who just flopped his hands up and down, up and down. It was bizarre. But quite an experience. But... yes, bizarre.
3. The play I was in went really, really well. I was really happy with it. There's another small production I'm going to be in in May. My role is smaller but it's the first production of this theatre group that, well we're just starting up now. So it should be interesting.
4. I'm almost done my France video and I will post it very soon. Promise.
5. I'm trying to buy rollerblades here.
6. We went hiking in a small stony village called Patones, tucked away in the Sierra. It was beautiful. Most of the routes are super long, though, like 4-7 hours to get to the pretty views, and we didn't have time to do one entirely, so we just wandered around the mountains near the village. And bought rosemary honey! And ate some straight from the honeycomb!
7. I saw a circus-cabaret show with my roommates on Sunday. It was very, very cool to see. It was 5 euros and run by a circus school, in a small, super intimate setting where you could literally hear the performers breathing. Some acts were better than others, but the ones that were good were really good... not even for the acrobatics, but for the emotion and intensity of the act. Like one man who did a performance on this white fabric that hung from the ceiling... he did some really neat acrobatics, but his face and his breath and his stretches, and the music and lighting... that's what made it a good show. Also... I couldn't help but think of my friend Brandi. Because she can do that shit!!!
8. I want to post a video of my friend Anika's mural that she painted by an Orphanage in Chennai, India. It's awesome.
I can't think of much else... I still love this city, but I am soooooo excited to have friends visit and to visit home in July. I am grateful every single day to be able to enjoy life in this way, and to love the people I love and have them love me too. It's ridiculous how lucky I feel.
